Herpes zoster

Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is a painful condition caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.1-4 Upon primary infection, often occurring during childhood, the virus stays latent in the dorsal root ganglia.5 In the Netherlands 94.6% (95% CI: 93.2–96.0%) of the population shows serological evidence of varicella zoster virus infection6, and 1 in 4 people develop herpes zoster in their lifetime.7,8
