IMPACT-V (Improving Public Access to Vaccination)

Utilising innovative multidisciplinary approaches to understand adult vaccination medical unmet need in the UK

IMPACT-V is a GSK-led project that aims to:

  1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of medical unmet need across adult vaccination programmes in the UK
  2. Generate ideas for effective solutions that work in practice, not just on paper.

Combining principles of policy analysis, behavioural and implementation science with the input of key patient and professional stakeholders, this project aims to identify common themes across barriers and enablers of adult vaccination access and delivery in the UK.

  • Moving the Needle is a report commissioned and funded by GSK and undertaken by the Office of Health Economics. It describes the public sector delivery of the National Immunisation Programme (NIP) in the UK after the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • A narrative review of published and grey literature on vaccination delivery was conducted, and validated through semi-structured interviews with experts from the field.

  • Connecting Threads is a report commissioned and funded by GSK and undertaken by the Behavioural Insights Team. It describes a holistic synthesis of qualitative and quantitative evidence on behavioural and social drivers of UK NIP uptake by adults.
  • A descriptive analysis of public datasets and a pragmatic narrative review were triangulated with the findings of the Moving the Needle report to highlight key themes related to influences on vaccination uptake.
  • The findings of the data and literature review were synthesised and described through behavioural systems maps
  • The data was also combined with BIT’s in-house AI tool ‘PersonifAI’ to develop personas

Behavioural Systems Mapping & Personas

  1. These two multidisciplinary, innovative approaches utilising behavioural science techniques were adopted in Connecting Threads.
  • Behavioural Systems Mapping

Behavioural system mapping is a method for exploring the complex relationships and factors influencing behaviours within a given system or situation.

This approach enabled us to analyse how different social, psychological, behavioural, and structural factors interact and influence vaccination uptake in underserved and at-risk groups (i.e. those with relatively low or variable vaccination uptake compared to other groups in the UK and groups eligible for additional vaccination programmes due to risk of infectious disease).

  • Personas are a way to describe and understand different groups of people, based on common themes of behaviour, needs, and goals, identified through primary and secondary research.

Personas help to distil research insights into an easy to understand and memorable format, and can be used to help people empathise with a particular group to increase the chances of interventions meeting the group’s needs.

IMPACT-V

The outputs of the IMPACT-V projects to date highlight common threads that impact vaccination uptake and coverage across the whole adult NIP:

  1. Concern, including perceived risks and benefits of vaccination compared to disease risk
  2. Knowledge about vaccinations and disease, including eligibility
  3. Trust in healthcare systems
  4. Access and logistical barriers
  5. Social influence, such as peers’ experience of vaccination or disease
  6. Language and literacy barriers
  7. Healthcare professionals’ knowledge, influenced by HCP training

The significance and interactions of these factors vary between individuals and are context dependent, but they represent key factors that can provide a foundation for the development and implementation of evidence-based interventions in real-world settings.
